Look Around Under many Tabs .... Home, Moving, Settling etc.
In order to legally enter and reside in Canada, Lec and Isaiah had to obtain Permanent Residents status. Lots of paperwork had to be put together and submitted first to Immigration in Canada then to the local center serving Thailand which was in Singapore.
We began the process in late 2014 expecting a 27 month processing period.
In August 2016 we were advised to attend an immigration interview at the Bangkok Embassy. We did so in late September. The officer was very thorough but nice to deal with. After each of us completed about a 30 minute review we were advised that our residents permits would be granted. It was an incredibly special moment which we will remember forever.
When we left for Canada we decided to just keep our Thai properties until we determined if Canada was going to work out for us.
We had gardeners and a maid to take care of our residence in Khao Yai....so no worries there. We had bought the land in 2009. We built a nice house, landscaped and decorated/furnished as Lec wanted it and later built a small guest house on the property. It was a nice place which we did not like to leave but Canada was calling.
Shortly after we left Thailand I was contacted by a teacher friend who asked if we would consider renting our house to a new teacher and her family coming from America. The teacher wrote me a lovely, warm and promising email begging to rent for 2 years. Given the family situation, the stable and responsible teaching job and references we decided to let them live in our house for a fraction of the market rental value - as it met their budget and thinking it would be better to have responsible people in the house rather than leaving it empty.
The couple broke up a few months after arriving in Thailand. We heard some disturbing reports of this female teacher and her two girls but what could we do so far away. Nothing she promised, including rent payments, happened without a lot of pushing. We could just hope things would be OK.
Eight months later she advised she was leaving Thailand.
When she and the girls left our house had been trashed.
We agreed on a damage settlement and, not surprising, she did not pay.
So we fixed up the house and eventually sold it.
Over the years I have had about 10 tenants in various properties in Thailand. In spite of them all having references and professional jobs I can say I have only had one "good tenant"
So we are trying to sell the remaining properties (as of today Dec 28, 2019) as being a landlord is not my cup of tea.
